I’ve been thinking about that damn hat all day now.  I thought perhaps to get some of my issues out of my head I’d share the pattern.

Basic Hat Recipe

Worsted Weight Yarn

Size G crochet hook

Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)

Notes:  Pattern is worked in rounds.  At the end of each round join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain 3.  Chain 3 counts as first stitch in each round.

Abbreviations:

Sl st – slip stitch

Ch – chain

Dc – double crochet

Working in a magic loop, ch 3 then work 11 dc; join with sl st in top of ch 3.  (12 dc)

Round 1 – Ch 3; dc in same space.  2 dc in each dc around.  (24 dc)

Round 2 – Ch 3; dc in same space. *Dc in next dc.  2 dc in next dc.*  Repeat from * to * around.  (36 dc)

Round 3 – Ch 3; dc in same space.  *Dc in next 2 dc.  2 dc in next dc.*  Repeat from * to * around.  (48 dc)

Round 4 – Ch 3; dc in same space.  *Dc in next 3 dc.  2 dc in next dc.*  Repeat from * to * around.  (60 dc)

Round 5 – Ch 3; dc in same space.  *Dc in next 4 dc.  2 dc in next dc.*  Repeat from * to * around.  (72 dc)

Continue increasing in this manner until the top of the hat comfortably covers just the top of the recipients head.  Begin working even (no increases).  Work even until hat is desired length.  Work one round of reverse single crochet.  Cut yarn and weave in ends.
