There are few things as frustrating for those of us who are mental as sleep. We can’t seem to get ourselves on a regular schedule with it, we get way too much or way too little, and it’s entirely inconsistent. We need sleep to function properly, but how do you get it?
The Depressed Moose is suffering from some sleep issues right now and so I thought perhaps I’d share some of my thoughts on the subject.
Some docs will refer to it as “sleep hygiene” – the habits they want you to get into to sleep properly. They’ll tell you things like this…
- don’t sleep during the day, regardless of how tired you are because then it’s harder to sleep at night
- don’t watch tv an hour before you lay down to sleep
- make sure the room is cool enough
- make sure your bed clothes are very comfortable
- run a fan for the white noise
- always lay down to sleep at the same time every night
- always get up at the same time in the morning, even if you’re still tired
- give yourself at least 8 hours between when you lay down and when you need to get up again
I do as many of these things as possible to try to help get a good night’s sleep, but I can’t always. Josh likes to watch tv in bed at night so that sometimes throws me. The laying down at the same time thing isn’t quite as easy as it sounds. But I try, every night.
The idea behind not sleeping during the day is that you want your body and your brain to be well and truly tired when you lay down at night. If your body is tired but your brain isn’t, you won’t sleep. And we need sleep time to heal. And for those of us suffering from Bipolar, not enough sleep can trigger a manic episode which is very not good.
Our bodies seem to like certain routines, so getting into a good sleep/wake routine is good for us. I know it’s hard, and sometimes feels impossible, but giving their suggestions a try is worth it, I think. And a lot of it is going to be trial and error – finding what works well for you and your body.
Things yesterday went pretty well. I got Josh’s slippers done and felted, now I’m just waiting for them to dry so I can stitch them to the soles. I did work on the sweater for a few minutes, which was good. We had an awesome lunch of cheese tortellini and meatballs. And we had good sex, which I wasn’t necessarily looking forward to but was able to enjoy. All in all it was a good day.
Today we have to take the Honda for an oil change, stop at the thrift store to get Josh some new jeans, and get the house tidied up again. We’re having some friends over for the afternoon/evening. Us girls are going to make jewelry while the boys attempt to fix Josh’s phone and then we’re having nachos for dinner. Should be an awesome time.
