- It gives me a sense of purpose. By teaching someone something I know I feel like a part of me will live on after my body has died.
- I learn better what I’m going to teach when I have to be able to show someone else how to do it.
- No two days are ever the same for me, and no two classes are ever the same, even when they cover the exact same content.
- Teaching gives me a built-in reason to interact with lots of different people.
- I am a people person, but I do that best in smaller doses. Teaching several short classes during the semester is perfect for me.
- I really like to help people and teaching has always felt like a great way to accomplish that.
- Evidently not many folks have patience anymore, but I do. I get told all the time how much people enjoy working with me to learn new skills because I don’t make them feel stupid or get all frustrated when they don’t catch on right away.
- I secretly always wanted to be a stand-up comic. Teaching gives me a little time to be “on stage” and I am a little funny while I do it.
- Money means very little to me. You don’t get rich doing what I do.
- This is the biggie: Teaching makes me feel as though I’m doing something to make a difference in someone’s life. Maybe what I teach you helps you do better in school and get a good job so you can support your family. Maybe what I teach you helps you feel more fulfilled in some way. Or maybe what I teach you just makes you smile. That’s enough for me.
top 10 reasons I love teaching

I taught classes at the university level and enjoyed it very much. I taught a human anatomy lab one semester. I was showing a sagittal head section and I lost a student! She turned green and dropped to the floor, out cold! I’ve never seen a person turn green like that before!!
I don’t think I’d like teaching teenagers though. Hubby comes home with such awful stories. It sounds more like crowd control than teaching. 😦

I started getting a degree so I could teach high school English and very quickly realized I don’t have *that* kind of patience. 🙂

Bahahaha. It takes a lot of patience. I like teaching ppl who are interested in learning what I’m teaching, I don’t want to be a babysitter.

I think that it’s wonderful that you’re passionate about teaching. I wish I had that passion – I quit my teaching job yesterday after ten years. Thank goodness there are so many that care so much out there!

It takes a certain kind of commitment. Or maybe that’s a willingness to be committed. Oh well. 😀

I admire people who have the ability to teach. You mentioned patience, and that, along with incredibly bad oral communication skills, are the main reasons I couldn’t do it. Heck, I don’t even like to train newbies at work… and yet I get them thrown into my lap all the time since I’m the veteran of the crew…

I’m really surprised. I figured Mecca would have some kind of grand, convoluted training program that everyone would have to go through. A brainwashing, if you will. 😉

Oh, that’s just orientation where you’re bound to a chair, forced to watch endless propaganda videos, and learn how to properly pay homage to the life sized statue of Sam in the break room! 😉 The newbs still have to learn the actual job from someone who does it…

Don’t be mediocre (not that it sounds like you are)! I remember all my good teachers, and all my bad ones, but nothing of the middle-of-the-road ones.

I know I couldn’t be a teacher, no patience and I hate kids. LOL Well, ok I don’t hate kids, just don’t like them much. 😉 I have trained people though in different jobs. So I guess I can teach, just not classroom teach. That, and I hear such horror stories from teachers. Scares me to death!

Kids and adults are entirely different creatures. Plus, it really helps me to not have to be in a classroom every damn day. I don’t think I could even be a professor. They spend too much time at the front of a room. Nope, not for me.
